OPPO Reno7 5G review: sleek, slim device punching above its weight
Oppo Reno7 5G Smartphone

TechMetro Africa had an opportunity to review the Oppo Reno7 5G smartphone which recently launched in South Africa.

The mid-range device became the newest member in the Reno family replacing its predecessor the Oppo Reno6 5G.

The Oppo Reno7 5G is an attractive, sleek, slim and lightweight smartphone weighing just 173g and is 7.81mm thick.

It comes with a plastic frame with a glossy finish. Oppo decided to move away from the steel frame which was part of previous Reno editions. However, the plastic frame seems to provide more grip on the device.

The device is available in Stary Black and Startrails Blue and the latter is the device we reviewed.

Depending on lighting and the angle you’re rotating the device, the rear of the phone reflects different rainbow-like crystal colours.

Unlike most current smartphones, the rear camera area which features the 64MP primary, the 8MP ultrawide and the 2MP macro cameras is not embedded in the frame. It is a bit outward which makes the device not sit flat on its back. It can give a little wobble but one can insert the phone in the plastic cover available in the packaging to get it to sit flat.

In today’s world, more and more people are using multimedia videos and photos to express themselves and Reno7 5G is well equipped for that. The smartphone has almost everything that someone who likes taking pictures or videos looks for.

On the front, one thing that is un-missable is the huge 6.43-inch AMOLED display throughout, with the 32MP selfie camera the only other visible item you see.

On the left side of the smartphone, the frame houses the card tray which you can insert dual nanosims and micro-SD card for additional storage and also the volume up and down buttons are located that side. The buttons are separated so it makes it easy to figure out which one to press when you want to adjust settings.

The power button is to the right side, whilst the audio jack and the USB-C charging port are located at the bottom of the device which is standard on most smartphones. The audio output is fairly average but quite good enough. Calls were clear and audible and the same for music.

One of the outstanding features of the Reno7 5G is the 4,500mAh battery which can fully charge within just 35 minutes. The phone supports the same 65W VOOC fast wired charging. We tested the charging speed from 0% to 100% and it is what Oppo promised. For gamers, this means short interruptions between gaming and charging when the battery goes flat.

On performance, the smartphone runs on MediaTek’s Dimensity 900 5G chipset which supports 5G and Wi-Fi 6, which ensures faster connectivity for an awesome user experience. This could handle everyday use without any lag or issues, unless you’re a power user.

Oppo paired the chipset with 8GB RAM and 256GB inbuilt storage capacity which is more than enough to store important photos, videos, music, and documents. Options of 2GB, 3GB and 5GB additional RAM expansion are also available.

When you compare the Oppo Reno6 5G, to the Reno7 5G, you may realise that there is not so much of a difference apart from updated storage, increased battery capacity, HDR10 screen certification and an audio jack.

Current Reno6 5G users may think twice about upgrading to the Reno7 5G looking at the fact that the functionality and capabilities of these devices are basically the same.

In conclusion, the Oppo Reno7 5G is an amazing device that any buyer may not regret purchasing. Oppo really made some effort to ensure the device is top notch when compared to the other devices in the same category. The frame, design, weight, camera and charging speed will blow you away. As a first-time buyer, I would definitely get a unit with no doubt. Retailing at R14 999.00, for buyers that want a high performance smartphone that is not too expensive, the Oppo Reno7 5G is the device to go for.
