South African mobile operator Vodacom, has announced it is launching the Nokia 2720 smartphone, designed to support senior citizens, people living with disabilities and individuals who experience other communication barriers.
According to a Vodacom statement, the Nokia 2720 Flip device is the first of its kind that has been created for the special needs market in celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day.
The 4G-enabled device is durable with useful features such as a 2.8 inch internal display, 1.3 inch external screen, big buttons and font for simplicity and ease of use.
The device has a 30-day battery life and up to 11 hours of talk time. In addition, the smartphone comes preinstalled with WhatsApp and Facebook apps, as well as speech software through Google Assistant, which allows users to make calls, ask questions and get directions through the Google Maps app using their voice only, says the statement.
Commenting on the launch, Karen Smit, Principal Specialist for Specific Needs, at Vodacom, said, “By expanding our portfolio with Nokia, we now offer a device equipped with features that meet the specific communication needs of the elderly or those living with disabilities.”
Vodacom says, in the event of an emergency, the phone has a built-in emergency button that can send an SMS with location details to five contacts, that have been pre-determined and loaded by the customer, free of charge.
The device also stores In Case of Emergency (ICE) information, including critical medical information and emergency contacts for further peace of mind.
Moreover, the company says customers who opt for post-paid packages can bundle Vodacom’s Hero Assist and Medical Assist, which offer exclusive emergency services, such as roadside assistance, security in the event of a home invasion and other unexpected medical emergencies.
In addition, Vodacom has included the ‘Emergency Services for persons with Communication Carriers’ link under the Safety & Security tab housed under the Vodacom ConnectU zero-rated portal, to allow customers ease of access to information without worrying about the cost of data.
The Nokia 2720 is exclusively available at Vodacom and is retailing at R1,549.00 and available on prepaid and postpaid contract.
